the telephone- more than just the telephone





From the earliest attempt of the telephone, which is for communication through speech- transmitting, the telephone has become more relevant to almost everyone’s lives. It has become a necessity for people in the modern world where its functions is way beyond verbal communication.

The telephone has changed a lot from its first model to the countless models of mobile phones nowadays. The functions of these phones have also obviously increased. The telephone has become a whole new culture which defines the modern society.

1G, 2G, 3G...4G??

After the invention of the mobile phone, Japan launched the first commercially automated cellular network, known as the 1G generation, in 1979 by the NTT network. By the early 1980s, nearly seventy countries adapted the 1G network.

About ten years later, the "modern" network technology on digital 2G cellular technology was launched in 1991 in Finland by Radiolinja (which is now part of the Elisa Group).


In 2001, Japan's NTT DoCoMo launched the 3G network. Application services of the 3rd Generation network included the basics such as wide-area voice telephone and more innovative functions such as mobile internet access, video calls and mobile TV, which is commonly used in Europe, Japan and China.


In the recent, the 4th Generation of network was launched. This 4G network allows even faster internet access then the 3G network, giving users even better entertainment though their phones.

the portable cellular phone is invented and available!!! (1972-1973)




Martin Cooper, the executive and a researcher of Motorola invented the portable cellular phone, which was finally available to the public on April 3, 1973!!

video calls more affordable!! (1960s)

More people were able to afford to make video telephone calls as they were getting more affordable and practical. People could now see who they are talking to on the phone along with hearing their voices!!

the first mobile telephone call was made!!! (1946)

The first mobile telephone was made from a vehicle in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. The equipment weighed 80lbs and of course was not for portable uses, but rather used on vehicles.

 The Bell System completed a U.S. transcontinental telephone line, which made everyone in the US connected to each other!!!

the first rotary dial phone was introduced (1904)



The first rotary dial phone was introduced in 1904 but was not used by the Bell System until in 1919. The rotary dial phone had been widely used from the 1960s through the 1980s.

The first coin telephone was installed in Hartford, Connecticut. Now people do not have to be at home to use the phone!

subscribers started to use numbers!!! (1879)

Telephone subscribers began to be designated by numbers rather than their names. This allows more people to use the telephone.

the invention of the first telephone (1876)

The idea of the telephone (the speaking telegraph) was from Innocenzo Manzetti in 1844. However, the first actual model of the telephone used for speech- transmitting is invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. Voice messages could finally be made! Through the telephone, Bell utters his first words to Mr Watson in the next room, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
